Case Study: The Power of a Niche Point of View
I recently worked with a client who believed that her consulting niche was "Medtech", specifically "AI in Medtech". Pretty niche right?
She was getting clients and making money but she wasn't loving the work that she was doing and she couldn't break out of highly specialised 1:1 client delivery and the stress-filled, feast/ famine income cadence that comes with it.
When I sat down with her and got deep into why she does what she does, she told me about the disquiet she's always felt around the story of Henrietta Lacks, a black woman in the US whose cervical cells were harvested in 1951 without her knowledge and replicated infinitely ever since. These cells played a role in some of the greatest advancements in modern medicine, but the story had always felt nuanced and had pulled at something in my client.
After some animated discussion (and a little bit of resistance!) my client realised that her true passion was patient consent and AI.
Her point of view is that AI has the power to vastly improve patient care, but that consent mechanisms need to be built into the technology NOW, before things go any further and that we cannot wait for the law to catch up.
At first glance, this looks like such a hyper-niche that it would be almost impossible to make money in.
Except when you step back and realise that there are hundreds of millions of businesses of all sizes collecting patient data and filtering it into AI systems already, all around the world. Businesses that also share her patient consent concerns, but which have no simple, easy to communicate framework through which to view, assess and implement AI consent mechanisms in their operations.
Until now.
